We will host a viewing of Mel Gibson's interpretation of the Passion Narrative, tonight (April 14th) at 9:30 pm, in the Holy Grounds Coffee Shop (East Heights UMC, 4407 East Douglas - Fellowship Lobby)
Feel free to bring a snack or a two liter bottle of pop to share.
The video is 126 minutes long and is rated R, for "Sequences of Graphic Violence."

There are just some occasions that call for a gathering...The Denver Broncos in a playoff game is one such occasion.
If you are not otherwise engaged we would love to have you join us for this event....
We should be ready to roll anytime after 1:30 on Sunday January 22nd. Game Time is 2:00.

You can find the action at 302 South Crestway, a few blocks West of Oliver and two blocks south of Douglas.

If you're up to it you might bring a finger food/appetizer and/or a two liter bottle of soda.
As well, we invite you bring an 18 ounce jar (or two) of peanut butter. I just heard today that Urban Ministries is very low on the peanutty delight that they use as a staple for their food boxes....

GraceMed Work Day is Postponed

The Grace Med workday that was planned for Saturday, Dec. 3 has been postponed because of the cold and rain/snow that's been predicted. I'll let you know when it is rescheduled.

GraceMed Health Clinic Fence Project

This project will be one of the final touches on the outside of the building before the main GraceMed Health Clinic moves from 1611 N. Mosley to the new location at 1122 N. Topeka in early January! This new location will provide GraceMed with abundant opportunities to expand their services, increasing access to quality health care to the uninsured and underinsured in our community!

Trick or Treat @ the Zoo

We will meet at the Sedgwick County Zoo to trick or treat. This will be a safe and fun environment for kids and adults to celebrate Halloween. Come In costume if you wish. We will meet outside of the zoo at 6:15. Tickets are $4 for members at all Quick Trip Locations and $6 for non members. The Oeding’s are zoo members and would be happy to purchase tickets for non-members. Let Shelly Oeding know by Sunday October 23, 2005. Children 2 and under are free.

Work on the new GraceMed Clinic

Hello Everyone!

I assume by know you have all talked to Kathy Lefler about the change in venue this weekend. The Habitat House if complete, but there is still work to be done. We will now be meeting at 1122 N. Topeka to preform some work on a building for GraceMed. The work day starts at 8 am and will include some painting and some demo / construction of a fence. Several of you have talked to Shelly about bringing various supplies for lunch and that is much appreciated.

The weather forecast for Saturday is a mostly sunny 65 degrees with a 10% chance for rain, so be ready to spend a glorious day outside in God's creation!

Please let me know if you have any questions, and we will see you all Saturday at 7:45!!

National Day of Prayer

Walk for Diabetes

Below is a message I received from Kim Nollette regarding the Walk for Diabetes:

Hello!

I'm writing to you to ask for your support in a very special cause. This year, I will be taking part in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Walk to Cure Diabetes in order to raise resources to help fund research for a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications.

Type 1, or juvenile, diabetes, is a devastating disease that affects millions of people-a large and growing percentage of them children. There is some good news, though. For the first time, scientists are predicting that we CAN expect to see a cure well within our lifetime!

I have many relatives and friends afflicted with this disease, so I'm writing to ask for your support. Now, more than ever, we need to be aware of the spread of diabetes.

I found a nice website today that provides links to numerous Relief Organizations that are just beginning the long road of recovery for Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

I remember the world-wide relief that poured out for the victims of the tsunami and I can only pray that the world will show the same reaction to this horrific event.

I want to offer you a special invitation this year to become part of a Disciple Bible Study Class that I am teaching on Wednesday Night (or Thursday morning if that works for you). Of course the class is open to the entire church, but I am sending you this e-mail (through Josh) because I really like you and want you to participate. Disciple is a heavy load, but it is well worth it. I am not exaggerating when I say it is life changing for many people. When I look at your class, I see the foundation for a great future at East Heights. June is Cleaning Supply / Toiletries Month!

During June, East Heights will gather cleaning supplies and basic toiletries to share with the needy. You can leave your donations of laundry soap (powdered detergent in a big box is best because it can be repackaged into smaller containers), dish soap, bath soap, bleach, cleansers, sponges, toothpaste, toothbrushes and deodorant in the bins near Hedrick Hall and near Fellowship Lobby. All donations will be taken to United Methodist Urban Ministries and delivered to those in need.

Take Kellogg east to Indianola Road. Indianola road is 3 miles east of Andover Road. The Augusta airport is on the South side of Kellogg. Turn Left (North) onto Indianola Road. Take Indianola Road about 0.9 miles to 91st street. If you come to a stop sign you went too far. Turn Right (East) onto 91st. Pine Road is the first intersection on 91st. Our house is the tan bi-level house at the corner of 91st and Pine Road.

Accepting Love

Thought I would pass along a daily devotional I received today from PurposeDrivenLife.com. I was particularly moved by the two attitudes that block our acceptance of God's love.

We Love Because…

Life is for love. We live to love. Love is so important, it is synonymous with God, or, as the Bible says it: “God is love.” When you love, you are near to God. When you get near God, you don’t become more spiritual, you become more loving.

“We love each other because He loved us first” (1 John 4:19). This immediately says a lot about the situation.

Primarily, it makes God’s love a starting point for everyone. This is not about growth — some spiritual mountain to climb where we can finally start loving other people — it’s quite the opposite. It’s spiritual ground zero. God loves us first. That’s where we all start. In the beginning, God loved us, and John says that because He loved us first, we can love each other.

So what’s the connection between His love for us and our love for each other? Well, think about this. When you start with being unconditionally loved by God, you take the wind out of the sail of earning love, or of locating the reason for love in yourself. We are loved because God choose to love us, not because of us, but because of the His nature. He is love; so He loves us.

That means we’re all at ground zero when it comes to being loved. We have no worth in ourselves except that which comes from being loved by God. As John Ortberg wrote in Love Beyond Reason, “There is a love that fastens itself onto ragged little creatures, for reasons that no one could ever quite figure out, and makes them precious and valued beyond calculation.” What a deal: God loved us into existence, loves value on us, and loves us home to Him. And we, “ragged little creatures” that we are, did nothing to bring about any of this.

This is why we can love. Because God loved us first this way, we can love others, too, because they have been given worth by the same unearned love, just as we have. The only catch is (and its’ a big one) we have to accept God’s love on this basis — on the basis that we do not deserve it; we merely receive it.

Two attitudes will block our ability to do this: 1) Thinking we are beyond hope: no one, even God, could love us; or 2) Thinking we are more worthy that most — that we in some way deserve to be loved. Actually both of these are true at the same time. We know both how undeserving we are, and how blessed we are to have God love us anyway. We love, then, because the world is full of scoundrels like us who are loved, just as we are.

Great conversation this weekend dealing with God's forgiveness and our acceptance of that forgiveness. I came away with the feeling that we can all accept God's forgiveness in our lives, but that for many of us it is much more difficult to forgive ourselves and others.

I found an interesting article on ChristianityToday.com that deals with the topic of forgiveness. It makes some interesting points to add to Smith's book and our discussion.
